Hi Dave,
I should note that pyfits is very, very deprecated, in favor of astropy’s FITS I/O routines:
http://docs.astropy.org/en/stable/io/fits/ <http://docs.astropy.org/en/stable/io/fits/>
AstroPy has stable conda builds.
You can get the same effect as pyfits (with the same API) if you do:
import astropy.io <http://astropy.io/>.fits as pyfits
