Sorry, still no luck. I just did

pip uninstall IPython
pip install IPython --upgrade

and I can confirm that when I start iPython I am now getting version 1.1.0:

(yt-x86_64)pfe20:hmc3_mhd_lowden mkrumhol$ ipython
Python 2.7.5 (default, Sep 18 2013, 13:43:29)
Type "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

IPython 1.1.0 -- An enhanced Interactive Python.
? -> Introduction and overview of IPython's features.
%quickref -> Quick reference.
help -> Python's own help system.
object? -> Details about 'object', use 'object??' for extra details.

However, when I try to run in a notebook, the error is exactly the same as before:

yt-x86_64)pfe20:hmc3_mhd_lowden mkrumhol$ ipython notebook --no-browser --port=51707
