As discussed on the yt-dev mailing list, the new radius definitions, which more correctly handle non-periodic datasets, result in a very substantial (~3 times) increase in memory usage. This makes analysis (especially using sphere containers) of large datasets difficult.

We should figure out how to revert back to the older, less memory intensive way of doing things, while preserving the improvements that the new definitions brought.
