Hi Sam, Matt,

Very nice work on this!

I'd be glad to test it out.  I have largely been skimming most of the
discussion of the new rendering.  Would it be possible to provide a couple
of scripts that I could try out on my own data?  I can run them on the PR
as well as the current tip and check for changes in results as well as time
taken.  Maybe one script to test each major upgrade would be helpful.
