I think the issue arises from using workgroups.  What needs to happen
is that the workgroup needs to become the top communicator, so that
the hierarchy instantiation only talks to the other "readeR" nodes,
not the "writer" nodes.

Sam, what's the best way to push the workgroup onto the stack?
